Butterfly Journal Cover !!...for Valentine's Day !!!...

Butterfly Journal Cover

In Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue, when a butterfly with two distinctly different wing patterns lands on Lizzy's finger, her father is baffled. But Lizzy simply states that the fairies must have painted it that way. Here's a project that lets kids create unique paper butterflies that are just as bold and beautiful -- and perfect for livening up the cover of a journal or notebook.

You'll need:

  • Notebook with cardboard or paper cover
  • Template for paper butterflies
  • Scissors
  • Craft or scrapbook paper
  • Glue stick
  • Bobby pins (one per butterfly)
  • Small acrylic gems and/or glitter glue (optional)

Instructions:

1. Print out the template and cut out the pieces.

2. For each butterfly, use the template pieces as patterns for cutting a left set of wings out of one shade or pattern of paper and a right set of wings out of a completely different paper. Then cut out wing bases for each set from contrasting shades of plain paper.

3. Glue the wing sets onto their respective bases, as shown.

4. For each butterfly body, glue a strip of paper around the midsection of a bobby pin, as shown.

5. Assemble and glue the butterfly atop the notebook cover.

6. Now your child can embellish the wings with acrylic gems and/or glitter glue, if she likes.

Fawn's Butterflies !!! ...for Valentine's Day !!!...

Fawn's Butterflies

In her role as an animal fairy, Fawn is responsible for teaching baby birds to fly, painting spots on ladybugs, and coaxing butterflies to hatch. Here's a fun and simple way for your child to try her hand at a little magical metamorphosis: transforming scraps of colorful paper into a collection of pretty little butterflies to adorn a houseplant or string into a mini mobile.

You'll need:
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Pipe cleaners

Instructions:

1. For each butterfly, cut two 2 1/2-inch squares from scrapbook paper. Trim the left and right sides of the squares to round them, as shown.

2. Accordion-fold each of the squares to create two sets of wings.

3. For the butterfly's body, cut a pipe cleaner in half. Fold one of the halves into a V-shape, as shown, and twist the ends together a few times just above the bend to create an abdomen (it should be about an inch long).

4. Sandwich both sets of wings between the pipe cleaner ends above the abdomen, and twist the ends a couple more times to hold them snugly in place.

5. Use your fingers to pull the wings open a bit, and then curl the tips of the pipe cleaner to shape antennae.

Belle's Valentine Rose !!! ..for Valentine's Day !!! ...

Belle's Valentine Bookmarks

A princess who likes to read as much as Belle does can always use a little help holding her place. With long pipe cleaner stems that tuck neatly between the pages, these bookmark roses will do the trick. But more than that, they'll let the recipients know how much you hold them dear -- each of the petals is a pretty paper heart.

You'll need:

Instructions:

1. Print out the template and cut out the pieces.

2. For each rose, cut out four hearts from scrapbook paper.

3. Turn one of the hearts upside down to resemble one of the center petals of a rose bud, and use a glue dot to stick the top of a pipe cleaner stem in place, as shown. Place a second heart on top of the first, matching up all the edges and pressing down firmly to adhere it to the glue dot. Use your fingertips to curl the tips of the hearts.

4. Fold each of the remaining two hearts in half vertically. Fold back the rounded sides of the hearts, as shown, and then fold down the tips.

5. Sandwich the sides of the center petals between the folded hearts, using glue dots to hold them in place.

Daisy's Daisies !!!.. for Valentine's Day !!!!...

Daisy's Daisies

She's fashionable, feisty, and fun loving. And she sure can cut a rug doing the jitterbug! No wonder Donald is crazy over Daisy, even if she does send him into a tailspin now and then. Coming up with a token of affection that will make this sassy southern belle (or any special sweetheart) swoon takes an extraordinary valentine, like a bouquet of paper flowers inspired by her namesake.

You'll need:

  • White, green, and yellow paper
  • Jar lids or other circular objects (between 2 1/2 to 3 3/4 inches wide)
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Craft scissors
  • Thin, cloth floral wires, 18 or so inches long (the flowers shown here are made with 32 gauge wire)
  • Pushpin
  • Glue stick

Instructions:

1. Trace the jar lids onto a sheet of white paper to create a bunch of circles and then cut them out.

2. For each daisy, stack two cutouts of the same size. Then fold the double-layer circle in half to create a semicircle.

3. Fold the semicircle in half once and then twice again, pressing the folds with your fingertips to make distinct creases. Now unfold the paper until you again have a semi circle, and trim the ends of the paper pleats to create daisy petals, as shown. When you're done, unfold the circle all the way and use a pushpin to poke a pair of holes through the center.

4. Bend a floral wire in half and thread the ends through the holes, as shown.

5. Use craft scissors to cut out a small scalloped-edge circle (about 3/4-inch wide) from a piece of green paper and thread it onto the wires on the back of the flower. Twist the wire ends together below the flower to create a stem.

6. For the flower center, scrunch and shape a 2-inch square of yellow paper into a disk and glue it in place.

Fairy Valentine Tree !!! for Valentine's Day !!!

Fairy Valentine Tree

With its glimmering gold fountains of magical dust, the Pixie Dust Tree is certainly the focal point of Pixie Hollow. But come Valentine's Day, Tink and the other fairies are thinking pink and decorating their tree house boughs with pretty heart-shaped leaves. Crafted from cardstock and shiny stickers, this tabletop tree will dazzle fairies and their fans alike. You can even print a secret valentine message behind the door in the trunk.

You'll need:

  • Template for Fairy Valentine Tree
  • Scissors
  • Brown cardstock
  • Craft knife
  • Scrap of craft paper (gold, pink, or red)
  • Glue stick
  • Sticker hearts or small scrapbooking hearts
  • Marker

Instructions:

1. Print the template and use it as a pattern for cutting out the pieces from the specified types and colors of cardstock and paper.

2. Place the tree template piece atop the matching cardstock cutout and use the craft knife (adult's only) to cut through both layers along the solid line of the heart-shaped door (leave the dotted portion uncut for the hinge).

3. Have your child write a valentine note on the message rectangle. Then glue the rectangle to the back of the tree trunk so the message shows when you open the door.

4. Now your child can decorate the tree boughs with lots and lots of mini hearts. (If you're using scrapbooking hearts instead of stickers, simply apply glue to the boughs and press the hearts in place.)

5. For the finishing touch, create a tree stand by folding the two stand halves along the dotted lines and then gluing the curved sides together, as shown.

6. Glue the stand to the back of the trunk, covering the blank side of the message rectangle.

Love-ly Ladybugs !!!...for Valentine's Day ...!!!

Love-ly Ladybugs

Just when everyone in Pixie Hollow thought there was no hope of ushering in spring on time, Tinker Bell devised a plan that proved what a talented tinker she really was. In short order, every task on Fairy Mary's list was completed in short order -- including putting the last dots on the ladybugs. These love-ly ladybugs are just the choice for industrious little valentine-makers. Kids can quickly create enough to hand out to a whole classroom or scout troop and still make each valentine a little different by varying the number and placement of the heart-shaped spots they draw on.

You'll need:

  • Love-ly Ladybug Valentines template
  • Scissors
  • Scrapbook paper (black and red)
  • Glue stick or glue dots
  • Black embroidery floss or thin yarn
  • Large-eye sewing needle
  • Ruler
  • Black colored pencil or marker
  • Gel pen or gold marker (for writing a valentine message on the back of the valentine)

Instructions :

1. Print out the template and use the pieces to cut out a black paper body and a set of red paper heart-shaped wings for each ladybug valentine.

2. Now add a set of antennae to the head end of each body. Thread the needle with the embroidery floss or yarn. Insert the needle down through the paper and back up again about ½ inch away, as shown. Trim the floss to the desired length and knot each end.

3. To complete the ladybugs, glue the heart wings onto the bodies. Then use the ruler and marker to draw a vertical line down the center of each heart to divide the wings. For the finishing touch, have your kids draw heart-shaped spots on all the ladybugs.

4. Finally, use a gel pen or gold marker to write a valentine message on the back of each ladybug.
